The festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated as a symbol of duty between brothers and sisters. On this occasion  a sister ties a Rakhi around the wrist of her brother in order to pray for his prosperity, health and well-being.and brother promises for her(sister) safety.

History Raksha Bandhan:

The religious festival of 'Raksha Bandhan'.Its started about 6000 years ago during Aryans established first civilization.In many languages and cultures, the traditional customs & rituals to celebrate Rakhi festival differs from region to region across India.
There are many historical evidences exist in Indian history regarding celebration of Hindu festival of Raksha Bandhan.
Stated as Mahabharata the  sons of Pandu(Pandavas).Named Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva, they were born to Pandu's wives Kunti and Madri, the princess of Madra. All five brothers were married to the same woman, Draupadi. Sri Krishna( originates from the Sanskrit word Kṛṣṇa),pandavas asked that how they could guard himself against happing evils in coming times.Krishna advised him to observe the Rakshaa Ceremony. And told how to CELBRATED.
Indra the king of Svarga (Heaven)  came face to face with the demon king  the Daitya-raaja in a long-drawn battle.The Daitya-raaja got better of Indra and drove him into wilderness. Indra, humbled and crest-fallen, sought the advice of Brihaspati, the Guru of Gods. The Guru told him to bide his time, prepare himself and then take on the mighty demon. He also indicated that the auspicious moment for sallying forth was the Shraavana Poornima. On that day, Shachee Devi, the wife of Indra, accompanied by Brihaspati tied Raakhi around Indra's right-wrist. Indra then advanced against the Daitya-raaja,conqueror him and gained his self governed.
This is how Raksha Bandhan came into.
